JONAS LORENTZEN
Musical Visionary
& Voice of Nebala
Jonas Lorentzen is a Danish musician, composer, and voice facilitator, and the creative force behind Nebala. His work draws on ancient vocal traditions and global spiritual ideas, approached through the lens of an artist rather than a spiritual practitioner. He uses the voice as an instrument of expression, inquiry, and emotional depth. Jonas’s music blends ritualistic inspiration with contemporary production to create immersive, human-centered sound worlds. His creative focus is on exploring how story, sound, and transformation meet.
Early Career & Heilung
Jonas gained early international experience as a vocalist with Heilung, the experimental ensemble known for its reconstruction of ancient musical forms. During his two years with the group, he contributed overtone and throat singing and developed a deeper understanding of ritual performance, ensemble discipline, and large-scale stage production. His time in Heilung shaped his approach to the voice as a physical, communal, and emotive instrument — lessons that continue to inform his work today.

Nebala: A Personal, Spiritual Sound
Following his time with Heilung, Jonas founded Nebala as a space to pursue his own musical and philosophical interests. Through Nebala, he explores Nordic heritage, mythology, and ritual sound while drawing inspiration from a wide range of vocal traditions, including Tibetan and Indian practices. The aim is not to reenact any culture, but to understand how different traditions use the voice as a tool for meaning and transformation.
Nebala’s debut album, Lustuz Laþu Wōþuz Alu, explores themes of sexuality, fertility, and love through a mythic and primordial lens. The name Nebala refers to a primordial void — the place where creation stirs before taking form.
The music brings together instruments such as frame drums, lyre, tagelharpa, throat singing, and Tibetan singing bowls, combined with contemporary production. Jonas works closely with musicians, researchers, and producers to weave traditional knowledge into modern expression. His focus remains on intention, presence, and the expressive and transformative potential of the human voice.
Work in
The Northman
Jonas’s creative abilities extend into the world of film. For the acclaimed movie
The Northman, he served as a songwriter, actor, and vocal consultant. His expertise in ancient vocal techniques was instrumental in shaping the film’s ritual scenes, especially the intense berserker sequences.
He contributed both musically and culturally, helping to bring authenticity to the film’s depiction of shamanic rituals and warrior traditions. His performance and guidance added depth and realism to the movie’s atmosphere and sound.
Beyond Music:
Voice & Workshops
Outside of recording and performance, Jonas is also active as a voice facilitator and workshop leader. He teaches practices centered on breath, embodiment, and the primal voice, helping participants reconnect with themselves and with the communal power of sound.
